Beijing Baby’s personal style journey

stylish outfit imageAn aside to my ongoing series on finding your personal style… (last update is over here)

Beijing Baby has written about the evolution of her style so far, with lots of pictures. See part one, part two and part three. I found it interesting to see what she wore for teenage life, and how it’s changed as she moves into the adult world. She’s also very candid about sharing what she thinks about each of those outfits now!

It’s curious that everyone who shares the development of their personal style online is younger than me though. Is it unseemly for a late-twenty-something like me to be fascinated by personal style? Am I old enough that other things are supposed to have become more important? Or am I simply looking in the wrong corner of the web? We still have to get dressed each morning, keep a wardrobe full of suitable clothing for our daily lives and work out what to buy when we’re out shopping, so I’d be really surprised if I’m the only ‘oldie’ who ponders her personal style from time to time.

If anyone else would like to share how their style has evolved over time, or even any dilemas they’re having at the moment, share away!

I am in my early 40s and finally feel like I’ve managed to find and define my personal style. The most important thing is that I now know what works on me and what doesn’t — it took many years (and many fashion felonies) to figure it out, but that’s okay. Now, getting dressed is not filled with panic but with actual pleasure.

It’s taken a long time to get here, but I’m glad I finally did!

You know where I’m at (still have some challenges, but I think about it all the time too), but I do have friends who are in their 50s who are still figuring it out. I think, though, that older women may be discouraged that they are still figuring it out and not really want to share that online.

As an almost 50 I feel that I’m about to take another style jump! Be comforted, Bargain Queen your style will almost certainly continue to
evolve. When you have babies the whole issue becomes a bit immaterial, but most new mums will eventually go ” let me out of these tracky dacks ” and another new style thing evolves.

My personal dilemma is my own self image as a bit of a “rock Chick” ,a style which I have carried off without a hitch until recently. My fear of looking as my dear eldest would say like “mutton” has led to a classier version of this style, but I am still resistant to the “classic” dressing a lot of women my age resort to. Are we supposedto let our individaulity go at my age and start blending in? Its hard to get clothes which fulfil my middle aged classy rock chick fantasy, so I tend to mix it up a lot, department store classic mixed with more edgy t shits and accessories. Markets and shops lke Dangerfield have great cheap little badges and earrrings.

only1kcm: Great to hear! If you want to share anything about your journey, it’d be great to hear it.

Rebecca: I’m really sorry to hear that older women feel that way. I guess it’s always difficult to admit you don’t know something that everyone else your age seems to have figured out. Personally, I can’t drive, but I’ve sort of made peace with that. Public transport isn’t that bad if you close your eyes and hold your nose ;)

Maggie: Thank you so much for sharing! Your dilema deserves a full post in response, so I’ll put something up for you today.
