How to alter bargain clothes

sewing needle and thread... great for altering clothesToday I found a great series on altering clothes over at Hot Off the Sale Rack, and thought I’d pass on my favourite tips.

Part One is about deciding whether it’s worth buying something that’s too big and tailoring it down a size. Tip: A-line skirts are relatively easy to alter.

Part Two and Part Three are about shortening straps on dresses (which would work equally well for tops). Tip: shorten them where they meet the back of the garment so your work’s not as noticeable.

Part Four covers repairs your bargains might need, like mending small tears and removing stains. Tips: tears and holes are easier to fix if they’re on a seam; not so much if they’re in the middle of the garment, and

Small, complementary stains that look food- or makeup-based have the greatest likelihood of getting washed off. Beyond that, tough luck.

Thanks for the mention! You definitely did a much better job of getting to the point of the posts than I did.

I have a few of dress pants just hanging in my closet that are too big. I want to make them to a smaller size, but, while trying one pair, I messed them up because I don’t really know how to properly cut the crotch. Will you give me some advice please?

I wish to alter a top. It is a strapless top which needs to be made smaller at the top. The bust fits but the top gapes open. Which would be the best way to take this in without spoiling the overall effect. It has bones in it at the front to the side of the bust and also in the back.

I need to be able to alter this to wear at a wedding in a weeks time.Could you please advise me.

Donna and Liz: I’ve posted your questions here:

Fingers crossed someone will answer them for you… they’re a little bit beyond my level of sewing expertise.
