Five shopping rules
It’s been an unintentionally numeric week here (Top 10 Australian fashion blogs, 5 people you need to talk to about money, 4 rules for enjoying trends responsibly) so I’m going to finish on the same note — with someone else’s great numeric-themed post.
Over at the Buffalo State Fashion blog, Julie has posted 5 rules of shopping. Her rules:
- Look beyond what you always buy.
- Always try it on.
- It’s gotta be comfortable and flattering.
- Ask yourself: can you afford it? do you really need it?
- If you still love it, buy it.

I’ve got a sixth rule: Think about what you will wear it with. So much money is wasted on clothes that never get worn because they just aren’t you. Lovely, yes. You adore it, yes. Wear it, no, because it really doesn’t go with anything you own, you have nowhere to wear it, and a million other excuses that are obviously very valid reasons. Valid reasons you shouldn’t have bought it. Sometimes, those pieces gain favor in future years, but most of the time they end up taking up closet space because you just can’t let it go. It’s my new golden rule. If I can’t think up a couple of outfits for it that don’t nvilve a whole new wardrobe, then no. Even if it is an incredible deal. ::sighs:: It’s for the best…
I completely agree Ivy! I’ve bought a few things like that too… gorgeous, but didn’t go with anything so I never wore them. *sigh*
I once made the mistake of buying something that I loved then I only got to wear it once which was in a home fashion parade at home with my sister then I never had a chance to wear it again. I now have a golden rule about shopping if you like it, it fits, and it looks flattering, and you will wear it with alott of things you already own, then if you still like it buy it.
Good point Bargain Lover — I think we’ve all bought fabulous things that don’t suit our lifestyle at least once. I wish I got invited to enough fabulous parties to wear all my vintage frocks… but the parties I go to are usually casual affairs. I’ve now given up and sold most of the dresses. They’re beautiful but I just don’t need them!
What about this for a rule: if you love the item, but can’t think of anything you own that would match with it, this gives you an opportunity to go out and buy something else so you can then match the two together?
For those real bargains, you gotta spend…………
But then again, I’m a shop-a-holic.
If I did that, my budget would go out the window… I think I’ll stick to buying things that match stuff I already own :)
