Fake designer bags, shoes - and clothes?

15 May 2007 16 Comments

[ designer bag image ]Fake designer goods bags, shoes and clothes are something a lot of people are interested in, if the number of questions I get in my email is any indication.

Pesli asks:

How do you spot a fake? I’m afraid to buy online ’cause of all the fakes available.

I wrote a long article about how to spot fake designer goods on eBay, which contains all the general rules for making sure you don’t get ripped off.

I also get a lot of specific questions though, about items people have bought and suspect might be fake — so today I’ll share the warning signs that make me suspect that a lot of the possible fakes people email me about really are fake.

For example, M. Walsh asks:

I just bought a dress for about $60 American, a silk

I lived in China for a few years. It was easy to tell fake wallets and handbags at the store that was popular in our city — they were all the same styles but with different ’signature’ fabric!

Andrea, if only they all made it so obvious to pick the fakes from the real deal!

Came across this post when searching for a chloe dress. Personally I’ve seen so many fake designer clothes almost exactly the same like the real one. The fake one is produced as fast as the real one. To tell you the truth sometime I cannot tell the difference between the real and the fake one cause they are so good at making them.

Personally, I don’t see an issue with buying a fake. Louis Vuitton’s are incredibly easy to spot; However, I came across a few great Chloe bags on eBay recently for about $70. I triple checked the pictures, they are not from any retailer website. They are GREAT fakes, in colors Chloe has made. No one will know the difference, unless you walk into a Chloe boutique. In which case, I will switch handbags. I’m very excited about finds like that.

Buying fakes is ripping off someone’s artwork and it is WRONG.

Adding to the previous list of “probably fakes”, A Bathing Ape (popular urban clothing line ) is often seen sold online, but dont get fooled, the popular Bape sneekers are most likely fakes. This compagny does not wholesale, and their clothing is only sold in authentic A Bathing Ape stores. For all you Bape fans out there, beware of replicas.

Sources : http://www.Bape.com , click on link seen on the home page ( download ), and as you enter their program, you will probably encounter a bubble saying they don’t wholesale.

    Thanks for the tip, Cynthia!

I must say, that’s a rather interesting site concept they have. While I haven’t found anything specific again Bape (and I did look), I advise all readers not to download .exe files from a source you don’t absolutely trust.

If someone deceived you, and you realize it is a fake, well what can you do? I would keep it. You have to be careful when buying on eBay, thank you for the article.

If you buy a fake on Ebay you probably WON’T get your money back (all Paypal and Ebay are concerned with is whether the item arrived..if it does and it’s a FAKE you’ll likely be left with it). The reason…

YOU have to prove it IS a fake…and to do that, you need to have written confirmation from the genuine company that produce said item.

“OK, so I’ll just nip into my local store and ask them to verify it’s a fake for me”

Um, sorry but this is HIGHLY UNLIKELY to happen. Luxury brands such as Hermes, LV, PRADA etc DO NOT provide letters of authenticity for items bought outwith their stores.

Even if you can provide photographs of the real deal and are willing to send the bag to Ebay / Paypal / Credit card company etc..THAT WON’T BE ENOUGH.

[I know from bitter experience - bought a fake Hermes Bag on Ebay…it’s an obvious fake which I can prove using photographs of the real thing but credit company won’t do a chargeback UNLESS I can obtain proof from Hermes (on headed notepaper) which they won’t provide.

So, I’m now stuck with a FAKE bag and down

Can I just say, that unless the place is verified as a legitimate seller (e.g. http://www.net-a-porter.com) of branded goods, just stay away.

Take this as a perfect example:
    http://www.designerbrandoutlet.com/product/3eb58fd0-7d0f-480d-9b26-e1fdd4b04965.aspx

You could think that a full fledged well-designed website is ‘telling the truth’ yea? No.

Prove me wrong, but on the site right now (quick before they take it down) you will see two pictures. One is a photograph of the Chloe dress… The other one is a photograph of a fake dress. How do I tell? Look at the dots.

Run your mouse over the fake dress picture, and you’ll see that the “dots” between two tree patterns down below are smaller/rounder… whereas the same “dots” in the REAL Chloe dress picture look more like leaf shapes.

Be aware… It’s the lazy brains/eyes who end up losing their money.

Don’t be fooled by “testimonials” either.

Wow, that’s scary, Patricia! Good eye!

Patricia mentioned designer brands outlet. I ordered a dress in November, paid by credit card, was informed that item was shipped, they charged my payment and no item arrived. I emailed and called so many times and no response. So moral of the story: THIS SITE IS THE BIGGEST CON. THEY TAKE YOUR MONEY AND RUN, THEY DO NOT DELIVER.

It is sad that an Australian site will do this to anotehr Aussie. Just what people will do to steal.

That’s such a shame, Lea! I don’t know how people like that sleep at night! Hopefully you and Patricia have saved a few people some grief, though.

  • Patricia said:

Hi Lea - that is unacceptable and wrong. You MUST report it to the authorities asap and get your money back. I had a look at the owner of this website, and the person lives in Sydney - see here:
    http://www.whois.net/whois_new.cgi?d=designerbrandoutlet&tld=com

The lady’s name sounds like that of Asian descent - and China is known notoriously for fake goods. I hate that because it reflects badly on the Chinese fashion industry, preventing emerging talented fashion designers as well as killing business for the suppliers who actually do create good quality non-branded clothes (like the ones I am trying to find).

Anyway, does anyone know who to report people in Aus who purposely sell fake goods while claiming it’s real? Look, it is possible that this lady doesn’t even know she is selling the fake stuff - because she could have just took the word of a wholesaler overseas - however, it’s important to put a stop to this.

I’m in VIC, but if you are in Sydney, good idea to report this to the local authorities and have the website shut down.
