Cheap gift ideas: For the traveler

By Meg in Florida 18 December 2007 2 Comments

As part of my strategy to focus on small gifts to make Christmas shopping easier and cheaper, I’m compiling the ultimate lists of gifts for under $20.

happy travels!Traveling away from home is trying on your body, your sanity and your wardrobe, but there are a swathe of smart selections travelers can pack to ease the pain.

We all know that the winter holidays are a big travel season, so for the travelers on your list, here are some ideas that will keep them comfy and chic on their journeys.

The comforts of home

To start with, PB Travel has a great gift set for those who love pink. Their first class travel package includes a travel blanket, pillow case, and sleeping mask — all for just $17.99.

Of course, just about anything that helps your loved one sleep better will be a great travel gift, so make sure to check out my sleep-themed gift guide.

Travel fashion

As many frequent travelers will attest, pashminas are a versatile choice for the traveler who wants to stay comfy and stylish.

Believe it or not, it is sometimes possible to find 100% pashmina wool shawls for under $20. Cheaper pashminas may be thinner than higher quality ones, but for traveling that can actually be a plus. So for women travelers, I wouldn’t hesitate to give one of the pashminas I tracked down for just $19.95. They come in a variety of colors, among others:

Travel pastimes

Traveling long distances can get pretty boring, so it’s important to have some distractions like these travel games:

Reading is also a great way to pass the time, but if you don’t know which books to buy, check out my giftguide for bookworms for other ideas.

Packing it

A tossed-around suitcase can be a dangerous place for fabulous accessories like a pair of strappy stilettos. These deluxe shoe bags provide plenty of protection for just $12.99 — and they come in a variety of colors, perfect for men and women.

If you just bought some earrings from my earrings gift guide, make sure they travel safely with this suede earring travel case ($19.99).

For other pieces of jewelry, there is also a gorgeous silk brocade jewelry roll for just $15.

Travel size

Travel size toiletries can make a good gift — if they are from an outstanding brand like Burt’s Bees. Their 5-piece travel shower kit is just $12.59.

It’s a tradition in my family that we each get a new toothbrush in our stockings. Given the amount of candy in our stockings, it makes sense even if it’s not the most exciting gift — until now. This travel toothbrush from OHSO is James Bond cool and pretty handy with its chamber that dispenses toothpaste to the bristle head. It’s perfect for long travels and lunch dates, and it’s just $17.99.

Sara has also found two great makeup kits for women on the go: the e.l.f. 2 Go travel kit for $5, and Hard Candy makeup palettes for $15.

And for those who wear perfume, Sara also found this Sephora perfume atomizer that’s the perfect size for traveling. It’s just $18.

For the interplanetary hitchhiker

Finally, I have a few gift ideas for your very long-distance travelers.

This black utility towel has the ultimate answer to life, the universe, and everything is printed upon it — all for just $12.99.

And because space travelers have to eat, there are freeze-dried packs of ice cream for just $2.99 at ThinkGeek.

No matter where your travels take you this holiday season, we wish you a safe journey. And remember to check in for lots more gifts under $20 here at The Bargain Queen. Happy travels!

Haha, I love the towel. Perfect gift for a geek, or for anyone who’s read and enjoyed Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
