As the British article recognizes, there are different “real worlds”! I have one real world which is hanging out at the computer at home combing the internet for work, writing my blog(s) and so on. For that I wear comfy t-shirts/sweatshirts and jeans.
I usually have to change to go out to ANOTHER world - wearing at least a high version of jeans and a fancier top and a trendy jacket- and that’s the low end of the spectrum. Sometimes I have to look professional and wear my good woolen/silk jacket(s) and slacks and even earrings with bag and shoes to go with, as my Swedish grandmother used to say.
Frankly, sometimes I look at the pictures here and elsewhere and wonder WHERE so those people WEAR those clothes? My life is more glamourous than many, and I haul out my grander things only occasionally. It makes sense to concentrate on your most prevalent style without neglecting the other parts of your life you have to get dressed for.
I have a sequined shirt that I wear every winter or so - it will last for years. And I just acquired a black sequined sweater I wore for New Year’s Eve, for which I can say ditto.
I know efficient and pared down closets are the thing - but years ago I read a fashion editor type say that to be really well dressed you have to have a LOT of clothes (& the things that go with them.) That’s because you have to be prepared for all this little nooks and crannies in your personna. I don’t go E. to NYC all the time - but I have some winter things on hand, even in S. California….
I afford this by getting rockbottom bargains - the sequined sweater was an Ann Klein - but I got it for $7!! and who’s the wiser - vintage and used things can save you a bundle. All my designer things have pasts…

Hi Pamela,

I wonder what size closet that fashion editor type had. One reason why I stress “efficient and pared down closets” is that most of us don’t have huge closets. And just because you can fit stuff into your closet, doesn’t mean that you can find it if there is a lot of other stuff in the way that isn’t worn as often.

If only I did have a bigger closet! Then I probably would keep more stuff, but still keep rarely worn items in a separate area.

I don’t think that one really does need to have a lot of clothes, though — not if one buys pieces that are fairly versatile. Sara has a wonderful post called Fashion editors don’t follow fashion, and by the looks of it, those editors probably don’t have to own many clothes.

Good for you on shopping for vintage and other used items! I like clothes with a past, too.

I love the fashion guidelines we need to add for 2008, especially the one that says women over 50 can still wear their hair long if it is shiny and fabulous. My mom is nearing 50 and she still has long hair and it still looks good on her.

I completely agree, Tina! Long hair can look great at any age. Of course, short can be cute on some women, too. Whether a woman has long or short hair, I think the most important thing is that she gets a style that is flattering on her. Sometimes that means paying more, but it’s worth it, especially since a lot of cheap trims can maintain an expensive cut for a while before you need to go back.
