Spring 2008 trends: Still clutching at clutches

silk takeout box purseBCBG Max Azria clutchWith check cards replacing check books and cell phones replacing… well, everything else, it’s no wonder that we saw the re-emergence of clutches and wristlets last year. The good news is that small bags are even bigger this year!

This trend has stuck around because small bags can be both stylish and practical. A flashy clutch can add an easy pop to your outfits without weighing you down, while even big-bag gals like myself can use one as an oversized wallet to keep the essentials easy to grab in a pinch. There’s truly a clutch for every occasion!

Whether you are building a collection or just looking for that perfect bag for prom, here are some fabulous bags that will have you clutch crazy — at equally fabulous discounts, of course.

Practical clutches for everyday

For both reasons, I recommend leather clutches. They’re easy to wipe clean, and they work better than satin as an all day bag.

This leather envelope clutch from Catherine Rapetti is a great example of a simple, everyday clutch. The version in natural is discounted to $180 from $300, while the black patent version is $210.

For a bit more oomph than a plain black bag, check out this Pythonoff bag from Kenneth Cole in black, python print leather. It’s now $59.99, down from $78.00.

If you’re more into flowers than fangs, then check out this blue leather rosette clutch, also from Kenneth Cole. Originally $198, it’s now $101.99.

Looking for a bag in this season’s hottest color? This patent leather clutch from BCBG MAX AZRIA comes in a gorgeous sunrise orange — as well as a lovely celadon green and a practical parfait. It’s now 54% off list price — $89.97 instead of $198!

Show stoppers

This sterling silver clutch from Novica is a great example. As a small bag, it’s absolutely fabulous — but I’m not sure that I would want to carry a tote-size version. This beauty is $188.95, down from $365.95.

Looking for a lot of punch for less? These silk take-out box clutches are just $12-$28, and they come with matching coin purses. They come in a variety of gorgeous colors, some available in Canada and Europe in addition to the U.S.:

Glitz galore

These metal mesh clutches from Prezzo in pale pink or blue are just $15, down from $30, and they are eligible for Amazon’s Super Saver Shipping.

Fierce and fun, these metal mesh clutches from Adrienne Vittadini come in zebra and cheetah are $49.89, down from $98, and are also eligible for Amazon’s Super Saver Shipping.

For a very sophisticated look, try this black sateen clutch with Swarovski crystal border. Listed for $207, it’s now $150.

Finally, if you’re looking for ultimate glam, take a look at this stunning clutch covered in Swarovski crystals! If that doesn’t catch the candlelight, nothing will. It’s $455, almost half off the list price of $795.

I am a HUGE fan of clutches.. but I always opt for the shoulder bag option only because I’m lazy (hee hee)!

You, lazy? Yeah right!

I have plenty of shoulder bags, but one reason why I like clutches is that I don’t have to worry about them falling off my shoulders.

*laughing* I can get lazy.. sometimes-ish… :) At least, in my mind I think I’m lazy.

As for the clutch situation, I love them but then you have to think about carrying it, putting it under your arm.. etc.. it’s best (for me), for a night out with friends/BF, not so much on a regular basis…

I think most people feel that way, FB. It’s easy to underestimate the time and energy it takes to get things done, so most of us have unreasonable to-do lists and therefore feel lazy at times. (Though of course, I’m sure there are people who really are just lazy.)

As for the clutches, I think that’s something you get use to, or at least I did. I just grab mine and go.
