Stress-free dressing for dates

necklaceFirst impressions are important. As I stress on my blog All About Appearances, what you wear sends strong signals to others before you even say, “Hi!”

It’s no wonder then that figuring out what to wear for a first date is enough to bring some women to tears. I know, I used to be one.

Don’t worry, though. I’ve got some great ideas for outfits that will send the right messages.

Keep him wondering

Flashing too much skin might catch a guy’s attention, but it’s not a good long term strategy because it likely sends the message that you’re easy and desperate. If you want a guy to respect you, you have to show that you respect yourself.

Plus, remember that dates are about getting to know each other better, so you don’t want his eyes plastered to your chest the entire evening. Nor do you want to constantly be checking yourself to see if you’re spilling out of your top.

So, be a little mysterious and just tantalize him with a peek. For example, wear a top that shows a little shoulder like this one.

Look natural and touchable

When doing your makeup, keep it simple. Most guys prefer it that way. And while red lips can be super sexy, consider how they might look later on after eating or smoochin’. Instead, consider some lip gloss in a natural looking pink to make your lips look kissable.

Clothes should be touchable as well. Choose soft fabrics like for cashmere or modal.

And don’t neglect your hair! Lay off any products that make your hair feel stiff or greasy. Even if you don’t leave all your hair down, consider leaving a few tendrils free for a feminine, flirty look.

Classic beauty

Most guys don’t follow women’s fashion trends, so don’t expect them to get a look that’s really out there even if some fashion magazine says that it’s the coolest look of the season. Wearing trends isn’t bad, but stick to those that have withstood the test of time.

Sexy classics that are still modern include pencil skirts, fitted blouses, a flirty A-line dress, sexy jeans, and many variations of the little black dress.

Plan ahead

Don’t wait till the last minute to pick out a date outfit. You’ll be nervous enough. Instead, choose your outfit and some alternates ahead of time.

Even if you don’t have a date planned, consider what outfits you have that might be date worthy. You never know when some guy might ask you out.

What’s your advice?

What advice would you give to a woman going on a first date? Do you have any favorite date outfits?
