Bargain Queens scoop Elle magazine
When this month’s Elle arrived with a gorgeous black and white cover, it had to be read immediately. I’m glad it didn’t go into my pile of unread mags because when I read it, I spotted something interesting: a story very like a post I wrote last year.
The Elle story reports that fashion designers wear the same look for years, while they push a new look onto us every single season — much like my post that pointed out how fashion designers don’t follow fashion themselves in February ‘07, scooping Elle by over 18 months.
It wasn’t just a similarly-themed story; the images are so similar that it looks like it might be a case of direct inspiration.
These are two of the images I put together to accompany our story in 2007:

To make up your own mind, take another look at our post Fashion designers don’t follow fashion from Feb. ‘07, then Elle’s story They wear it well in the Oct. ‘08 issue (p.408 if you’d rather read it in print) and see what you think about the similarities.
To be clear, I’m not accusing Elle of anything; sometimes two people do come up with exactly the same idea completely independently of one another. Even if they were inspired by my post, they’ve used different images and their words follow a very different style to mine, so they’ve done nothing wrong.
But in either case, The Bargain Queens got the scoop. Or rather, you got the scoop here first. For free. In a publication that aims to only write about clothes you can afford.
Could this be why magazines’ circulation figures are dropping? ;)
PS: What do you think? Direct inspiration or sheer coincidence?

Well, they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
it’s funny…I’ve had the same thing happen with my Fashiontribes.com blog. The first time, I thought, “nah…I’m imagining it” but when it consistently happens, it almost (almost!) becomes flattering. At least you know industry insiders are reading what you publish…and then following your lead! Congrats majorly on scooping Elle by an insane lead time!
Imitation is NOT the sincerest form of flattery. It is simply evidence that people can’t think for themselves!
I admit, I do feel a little flattered… but I also think that if Elle like bloggers’ work so much, they should hire us to create it just for them! ;)
