How to find extra storage solutions: Organize your wardrobe, Part 3
Okay, you’ve cleared out your closet so that you have a streamlined wardrobe free of clothing that you can’t — or shouldn’t — wear. Then you gave your closet space a makeover so that all of your keepers are easy to find.
Now, in Part 3, I’m going to give you some ideas about where you can find or make extra storage space so that you can continue to store everything even as your wardrobe grows.
Let’s start by taking a look around your bedroom.
Look up
Bare wall space is a good sign that you have room to grow your storage space.
If you’re buying new furniture for your bedroom, look for taller dressers, not just wider ones. If you need to easily access the top of your dresser, get the tallest one that’s comfortable. If height isn’t an issue, consider getting an armoire instead. Depending on the design, you can use the upper portion to hang clothes, store clothes in boxes, or even hide a television. Plus, the area above the armoire is the perfect place to tuck extra items such as bags in decorative boxes.
If you have the room but aren’t ready to spend that much money on furniture, consider putting in a tall book case. Plain book cases are inexpensive and are a great way to add storage vertical storage. Just buy a set of decorative boxes that fit on the shelves and put clothes and accessories in them.
If you don’t have the floor space to add more furniture, you can also add shelves and hooks on the wall above the furniture you already have. Use them to display your pretty bags and decorative boxes. The shelf next to my bed has three hooks built in below it that hold some of my purses, while my earring organizers sit on top. If you’re running low on wall space, consider adding shelving above your bed, above your door, or even above your closet door if there’s room. I’ve also seen some people decorate their walls with purses or hats on hooks.
Look down
For kids, the space under the bed can be a dark, scary place, but adults know that it’s a great place to hide clutter at a moment’s notice. The trick is to utilize it to its fullest potential. First of all, raise your bed with the help of bed risers; it will unleash more space underneath. Then, instead of just stuffing things under your bed, put them into specially shaped storage boxes that will let you easily retrieve everything. Now you have a place where you can store items that you don’t use often such as seasonal garments and formal wear.
Look under other furniture as well. If your dresser has feet, then there’s probably enough room to fit something underneath even if it’s just a pair of slippers. If you have a chair in your bedroom, perhaps there is room underneath for a decorative box for odds and ends.
Don’t neglect space in the middle
Furniture doesn’t have to stay up against the walls! If you have the room, why not add a chest or small dresser to the foot of your bed? And if you have a sitting area, don’t forget those nifty storage Ottomans!
Behind the door
There’s hardly a door in my home that doesn’t have something hanging from it. Hanging a hook on the back of your door is an easy way to add more storage space. Keep your jacket behind your bedroom door so that you can grab it on your way out every day. Or, thanks to stackable hangers, you can hang a jacket and a bathrobe, or several jackets.
Move it out of the bedroom
The bedroom is by no means the only place to store clothes. If you have room in your bathroom, you could also hang your bathrobe in there. For that matter, you can also add hooks near your front door to keep some jackets on. Keep a shoe rack near the door, too, to hold sneakers and work boots. Worried that might not be the way you want to decorate your foyer? There are also shoe cabinets that add extra storage while keeping everything hidden.
Of course, if you have an attic or basement, you can also store rarely used or seasonal clothing there. Just make sure that everything is packed safe from bugs and moisture. Choose containers that can be sealed tight and make sure that you clean your garments before storing them.
Until next time
That’s it for now on the Organize Your Wardrobe series. I hope I’ve given you plenty to think about and that your new, organized storage spaces takes a bit of pain out of getting dressed every day!
