Pirate party costume
I don’t usually post pictures of my outfits, but since I asked for help with my pirate party costume, I thought I’d better show the end result.
In the end I didn’t dress up as a pirate or a wench. Instead I went as…

Pirate treasure!
Or as another guest put it, ‘booty’.
I decided to wear something that wouldn’t look completely freakish if noone else at the party had dressed up. I’ve been embarassed at many ‘fancy dress’ parties where everyone except me wore jeans and I wore something very costume-y like a corset and full skirt, hot pants or over-the-top makeup.
The costume came together pretty easily. I piled on almost everything gold I own and added black pants to hide that I’m a bit plump at the moment (disguised by my faux-model pose). Then I used some subtle gold hair stuff and makeup to finish it off. In hindsight, I could’ve piled on a bit more jewelry, although you can’t see the bracelets on my other arm in this pic.
Since I had all the ingredients already, it worked out effectively free:
- Top: Akira Isogawa dress I wore for my wedding, tucked into pants
- Shawl: Found on special at Sportsgirl last year
- Pants: old, faded work trousers (Morrissey from the pre-Oroton days when their stuff was sexy)
- Belt: Vintage Ferragamo, thrifted years ago
- Shoes: Bargain Patrick Cox that I bought recently
- Jewelry, not all shown in the picture: earrings from DJs, a chunky silver bracelet I’ve had for years plus my new bargain gold bracelet
The final accessory was a bottle of rum, because what else do you take to a pirate party?!

Err, if that’s plump I’ll eat my pirate hat.
Actually maybe not as I’m sure that’s full of calories and if this is the new plump I’d better be wathcing what I be eating….
Nice costume Katie!
Shopping Sherpa, thanks for the comment. I’m a little bit bigger than I look in the pics — turning hips diagonally towards the camera takes a LOT of weight off.
Still, I’m not huge and I’m very lucky not to have a real weight problem. I’m just having a big whine atm because I’m a size larger than usual and can’t fit into most of my trousers. I don’t think I’m too big in general but I am too big for my clothes… so frustrating!
Fabulous idea and fabulous costume - you look great!
I had a friend who went to an ‘Australia’ party as Ayers Rock. A little bit of creativity goes a long way, I say. Pirates booty - clever.
Thank you!
Love the Ayers Rock idea. How did she make a costume that looked like Ayers Rock though? I keep thinking papier mache but that would be a lot of work!
